Acupressure: the Earth Element

person with arms outstretched at the beachThe five elements of Chinese medicine are: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and water. Let’s take a look at the earth element.

The earth element is all about balance. The earth is actually what receives us, the gravitational forces. The earth is a nurturing influence in our lives if we allow it. This means going with the cycles of nature. It’s feeling secure, knowing yourself, trusting, being in the moment.

Physiologically the Earth element governs digestion. The plants that we eat come from the earth. The internal organs in your body which are governed by the earth element are the stomach and the spleen (small organ located inside your left rib cage just above your stomach. Your spleen stores and filters blood and makes white blood cells that protect you from infection) These organs in turn nourish your muscles and your complexion. When your muscles are toned you have a greater sense of self.

Mentally the earth element corresponds to reflection or recall. We reflect on what has happened and digest our experiences which in turn leads to a sense of being grounded. But if you are in the fast lane (fight or flight) and life is passing you by at a mad rate without your evaluation and control, then you really are not grounded, are you? The earth element governs these actions and reactions.

Tips:

  • Walk barefoot on the beach or in your garden a few times a week and feel the exchange between the free radicals in your body and the earth’s ions.
  • Take a regular walk in the forest and look at the trees and shrubs.
  • Buy a plant or plant a tree in your garden.
  • Come to Get Back Health Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic this week and get your nervous system adjusted so you can connect directly with your stomach and spleen.
